Video Tutorial: Pom Pom Pinecone Toddler Craft

This craft is super easy for toddlers – all it takes is a pinecone and some pom poms.  There is no glue, no paint and no adult intervention needed.  Just make sure you “Don’t eat the pom poms! And, Don’t put the pom poms in your mouth!”

This pinecone pom pom craft is perfect for toddlers because it gets them working on hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills without being too frustrating.  It’s also perfect for adults because it requires no intervention – just a bit of supervision to make sure nobody eats the pom poms or puts the pom poms in their mouth.  Little kids who aren’t quite ready to make a more permanent craft will also enjoy putting the pom poms into the pinecone and taking them out again.

My son loves that he can make his own crafts – just like Mama! – without needing anyone to do any of the steps for him.  He also loves that this craft involves no waiting for anyone to prepare anything for him, and I love that it involves very minimal clean up – which he usually does himself – when he’s moved on from it.  Two year olds can have such short attention spans, and this craft is perfect because it can be done again and again and I don’t get upset or feel like I wasted an activity or supplies when he tires of it after just a few short minutes.

While some might say this is just an activity and not a real craft, a lot of the things I see listed as ‘toddler crafts’ are actually better suited for preschoolers or kindergarteners, or they are crafts for adults to make for toddlers – they aren’t things toddlers can actually do on their own.  And, since we encourage toddlers to ‘cook’ with fake food and ‘clean’ with pretend vacuums, why not let them play at ‘crafts?’
